Good day. I’m a BCom Financial Accountancy Honours student at the North West University. I received a bursary during June that covered all my student costs. Prior to me receiving this full cost bursary, I had other bursaries that only paid smaller amounts. The terms of the full cost bursary is that I’m only able to make use of it by itself and not other bursaries. The other smaller amounts of bursaries that I rightfully applied for and received was therefore cancelled and reversed by the University. Money was deposited into my account which was authorized and approved by the university, I thought it was for food and student living expenses as a result of the full cost bursary. I however, at the end of the year, found out that I am responsible for paying over R22 000 of the money that I spent on textbooks, food, living expenses, etc. I feel like it should not be my fault that the university authorized funds into my account which they now say I shouldn’t have received. I would not have used the money had I known it would result in a negative balance that I personally would have to pay. The authorizing of funds was negligence on the University’s end, I especially specifically did not know I could not use or claim the money. I though it was money from my full cost bursary. As a result, I would not be able to graduate with the debt that I had no idea I was incurring. I need legal advice.
